Currently reading through that too. Not my favorite, but enjoyable enough for me. Wouldn't be missing too much if I hadn't read it, but now that I've started I want to see how it ends.CByrneIV wrote:and listening to the entire Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepherd on audible.

Next one up is Monster Hunter: Legion, due out in September. Don't know about the next in the Grimnoir Chroniclesseries, or the sequel to Dead Six

Finished "Lost to the West" an easy read/overview of the Roman (byzantine) Empire from the fall of Rome to the fall of Constantinople. Good survey of that history and an engaging read.
Now into "Outlaw Platoon." Can't put it down. A first person account by a Plt leader in the 10th Mtn Div platoon during 2005 in the 'stan. Good Lord. the character of the characters and the vivid firefight recollections...

Just finished Resurrection by Steve Alten. I picked it up at Goodwill for $2.25.
Alten is the author of Meg (about the Jurassic super shark) and Domain (about Mayan prophecy).
Resurrection is the sequel to Domain, and as bad as Domain was, this book is worse. Alten throws all the clichéd ideas onto the page in the hope that something will stick At one point he apparently has a transformed Earth orbiting Sirius.
Yes, it's that bad. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK.

Mark Twain: A Life by Ron Powers. Interesting look at his life. Powers is pretty funny at times too.
Bad Luck and Trouble Lee Childs. I think this is near the first of the Reacher books. He makes mistakes but the plots aren't bad. I can't believe they're actually making a Reacher movie with Tom Cruise as Reacher. That's going to be some serious CGI effects to make Cruise loo 6' 5" and 260 pounds.
Guardian of Night by Tony Daniel. Slogging through because he's really working at creating a universe with plausible aliens. They "speak" through aromas.
Game of Thrones George R.R. Martin Didn't especially like it, but can't decide why. The dwarf was the most interesting character.

I've read a few of the Reacher novels. They were fine for spare-ish time. I can't see Cruise as Reacher either.Rod wrote:Bad Luck and Trouble Lee Childs. In regards to Mark Twain by Ron Powers, I find myself laughing out loud occasionally. A clip from the period when Twain was in San Francisco.
The artists themselves tended to be far wilder than their art - running around the city in rough work clothes, firemen's helmets jammed on their heads, cigars between their teeth, holding marathon poker games, indulging in sex and drugs. The male bohemians were equally colorful.

I was reading Dead Six but it just hasn't caught my interest; I keep setting it down for something else, but will finish it.
Finally got The Hogfather (Pratchett); I've watched the movie multiple times (its a holiday favorite here) and finally got the book, and its better than the movie. Interesting since other Pratchett stuff has left me cold; this was wonderful.
Finally picked up and read a Brad Thor novel Lions of Lucerne. Since I finished it in 4 days (spare time) I must have enjoyed it but was dissatisfied at the end... I think just a bit too much unrealistic 'luck' and 'just in time' events leading to the end. Still satisfying overall.
Just arrived and starting next: David Weber A Rising Thunder (the latest Honor Harrington) and a Settlers of Catan novel.
