W.E.C.S.O.G. (A) Mini sandblasting cabinet

Post by Captain Wheelgun »

Wile E. Coyote School of Gunsmithing (Accesories)

As part of my ongoing efforts to learn gun refinishing, I recently bought an air eraser from Horror Freight. This is essentially an airbrush turned in to a mini sandblaster. After trying it out on an old, rusty steel carpentre's square, I discovered a few things.

1) I needed a bigger air compressor than what I was using for my airbrush.
2) The blasting media goes everywhere. (I was smart enough to do this outside & wear a breath mask and face shield)
3) 200 grit aluminum oxide media, while not super-expensive, ain't cheap either, and is worth trying to re-use if possible.

The answer to 1 is obvious, buy a bigger compressor, which I have already done. 2 and 3 took more thought and digging around on the internet. This lead to this weekend's project, a tabletop blasting cabinet.

I found the clear storage tub at Wally World, the flanges and air fittings at Lowe's, and the arm cuffs were cut off of an old t-shirt. I sandwiched the cuffs between the outer flange and the tub. The flanges also stiffen the side of the tub where the arm holes were cut. I installed standard 1/4" NPT air hose fittings in the side of the tub to connect the blaster to the compressor. I decided that made more sense than trying to pass the hose through then trying to seal the hole around it.

I hope to be able to try it out soon, I'll let you know what happens.

Should work well, and you've got my attention. I've seen similar rigs used as a kind of vacuum isolator, but never thought about making one into a sandblaster.

To be honest, unless you are going with a real blast cabinet that recycles the media, you are probably better off just suiting up with proper PPE and working outside with something like a Speed Blaster.

About $100, including the gun, tips, hose etc...
As much as I hate to recommend them because they've pissed me off for the last time WRT their policies on shipping to Alaska, TP Tools sells the whole "operating system" for a DIY cabinet, and their cabinets themselves are second to none. I currently have the 780TL in my shop.

That's brilliant!
And there's the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
Just a thought: don't you need some kind of filtered exhaust vent, to let the air pressure out? Otherwise the pressure will push the medium out around the lip of the lid.
If time, chance and random process can produce a platypus why not an ammo tree?

If you look at the left edge of the 2nd photo you will see a 1/2" hole drilled in the tub with a cotton cleaning patch taped over it to act as a filter. We wil see soon if that is going to be enough to do the job.

As for getting a 'real' blasting cabinet, I'd love to, but I don't have anyplace that I can dedicate to the space required at this time. Maybe someday, but I think this will do as a starter for now.

I have to admit, I'm fascinated.

Does the aluminum oxide start sharp and get "rounded?"

Do you get plastic debris mixed in with the media? How do you separate it back out? Throw it up and down on a blanket in the wind?
Note to self: start reading sig lines. They're actually quite amusing. :D

I have been think about adding one of those to my shop for some time. I make wood carving and signs on the CNC and they always require sanding after the tooling is done. I have been using big 10" Nylox abrasive wheels for that but I think blasting is the way to go. I have corn cob media and walnut shell media that i would like to try out. I think it may be a bit more gentle on the wood than the silicone carbide.
