Mac laptop shopping: school me

Post by blackeagle603 »

Daughter #2 has saved up her pay and is looking to [strike]go to the dark side[/strike] get an Apple laptop. What should I be steering her towards -- being mindful of her limited (student) budget? A refurb with warranty just the ticket?

I plan on just switching to an Air for my next mac book - and setting up a display, keyboard, etc at the office.

However, if she's going to be doing video, and music editing, I think she needs a pretty powerful computer.

Looks like it's boils down to ?Macbook or Macbook Pro? Or is a MacBook Air viable?

Looking at Newegg I can get a recertified Macbook with 2GB of RAM for about half the price of a Pro. I have no idea what's in the step up from Macbook to Macbook Pro.

Probably no more than 2 inputs (vocal + accomp) for her personal demo/marketing for soloist work at weddings, funerals etc. Any more than that she's already getting pulled in with musician geeks to provide vocals who have pretty advanced home studios.

Update: After some shopping, ruminations about her actual use and balancing that against to Daugther #2's budget we pulled the trigger on this unit. It'll be primarily her book bag/college paper machine for working (and socializing I'm sure) in downtime between classes.

I wondered about the RAM from the earlier post you made. Held out for 4GB but wasn't clear on the ease of upgrading.

Thanks for all the time and input. Good to have some backup going into strange waters (esp. with child's largest savings/spend ever).
