Seems Ivan has lost at least 50 tanks & other AFVs to what they claim to be an Israeli-made "mystery weapon". For point of reference, their initial incursion was with a reported 150 tanks. (About five battalions worth, @ the Soviet/Russian standard of 31 tanks per battalion for armored units, or three battalions and some directly assigned to the Motor Rifle guys if they're using the larger "square" battalions.) That's a whole lot of attrition for five days of fighting. If there's any sort of actual "mystery weapon" involved beyond just crappy conscripted troops going up against western-trained regulars, my money would be on upgraded warheads for the classic RPG-7. I understand that someone makes a tandem warhead for getting past the reactive armor the Russkies put on their tanks. Couldn't happen to nicer folks, if even half what they're reported as doing in the occupied areas is true.

Wonder how much time those Georgian troops in the sandbox actually spent fighting insurgents, versus how much time they spent being schooled by US military personnel. Depending on how frequently they rotated home, there could have been a good amount of cross training taking place there.

While all training is good training I don't know how much learning how to hunt down insurgents is going to help the Georgians take down Soviet erm... Russian armor like it's 1945.

On the other hand, by learning to fight insurgents, you also become familiar with what works (and does not work) for their side. Might be they could have picked up some tricks and techniques that the US Army has developed counters for, but the Russians have not learned about yet.
Because it's obvious, barring any great brilliant surprises, a stand up slugging fest with the Russians is not survivable by the Georgian military. So insurgency and unconventional warfare may be the only cards they can even try to play.

That is a good point randy. I am standing by for the Russians to start babbling about Georgian insurgents and IEDs. On a slightly different note has anyone else heard the rumors about Blackwater or US SF involvement?

I've only heard it from one source, some moonbat babbling on the radio the other day. Haven't heard it anywhere else from any credible source until you mentioned it.

So I am a credible source now? Well I've got proof that not only was Blackwater and US SF involved, but so were the Greys. The secret weapon? Space Laser. Seriously though the Ruskies said that they captured an English speaking black man along with several other native Georgian "saboteurs" and I there were reports of Blackwater like mercs at a hospital in North Ossetia. I think I got both of these reports from Drudge, and given all the crap that's flying around who knows if it's accurate or not.
