sorry, no samples - it was during WWII, so not really sure about the details. We were supposed to have used the machinery we had to bore and polish ice cream machine cylinders to make shells - which would imply a fairly large shell... Maybe we made the actual projectiles... (Someone should have asked my uncle before he died - he would have known.)

How many people knew that Singer Sewing Machine company also made firearms for the US government?

I did.

In fact, their first plant was(where I believe they made the 1911s), in Elizabeth, near the Ikea and Jersey Gardens Mall. Built in 1863. I'm not sure if it's still there, as I haven't been up there in awhile.

How many people knew that Singer Sewing Machine company also made firearms for the US government? Or the Bendix plant (making brakes for US auto manufacturers) made aircraft parts for US combat aircraft?

I have no idea how many cannon plugs I had to rewire that were made by Bendix. It's not that they were badly made, it's just that even an EF-111A will shake wires out of their sockets after a while.

Heh. Just as long as you didn't run into any newly-minted 5-levels that took 12 hours to rebuild said cannon plug. (Oh, the strange things that people more experienced than me have done... very slowly). I hope Australia brings its F-111s to Red Flag if/when I get to go. That is, of course, if it's before they retire them. I've seen static 111's; I wanna see them in the air.

I was on the EF-111 OFT&E observer team. Even more awesome than seeing them come in low level is feeling them make a .9 Mach low level pass over your RADAR site. (that pure white screen on what is supposed to be an acquisition RADAR PPI scope is what is known as a clue).

The EFs were good little piggies. I miss them sometimes, unless the translating cowl system is messed up. I don't miss that at all.

For real fun, watching the F-models weave and bob around Melrose Range couldn't be beat. If you were lucky, you'd find out how it got the nickname of "Whispering Death."
