Verizon Android Phones

Hi all...

I'm up for "new every two" and decided I want an Android-based handset.

Instinct tells me to jump on the new "X" -- 24gb mem out of the box, 1GHz processor, 8MP/720i camera, mobile hotspot... I could go on but you get the picture...

So I visit the store today and...

First, the "X" is bloody HUGE. Not too heavy, and in terms of total volume not much bigger than my (DESPISED) LG "Voyager", fits OK in the pocket (surprisingly) but still seems IMMENSE.

Gotta say I'm not crazy about its lack of a HW KB though the touch-keyboard implementation seems to work even better than the iTouch...

When I got looking at the store, though, they've got over 1/2-dozen Android handsets from various manufacturers. Sure - Android is Android but we all know the implementation/updates/etc can make a world of difference...

Some of the various models had all the features I noted above - though none had ALL of them except the X... OTOH, several of them were in a much smaller form-factor while still maintaining a good screen-size...

One final thing: They have a custom mount/charger/dock thing for the "X" that solves one of my HUGE peeves about the cells in the car -- trying to use the thing or put it somewhere solid/charging/etc... With this add-on it would be much easier to use the GPS features and hard-wire to my stereo in a solid way...

Another GREAT point: I could drop my Sirius "satellite" subscription in favor of a "listen online" -- much cheaper, and yet same quality sound...

I've got "analysis-paralysis."

Too many choices.

I'm not likely to "root" it - though if I had a good reason I might consider it... Mostly I'd like to further consolidate and be able to dump the iTouch, and since the Apps I use most are available for both...

Can someone help me wade through the choices?

The BIGGEST (pun-intended) problem I have with the "X" is the size....

Can't answer most of your questions, but... I did get an LG Ally about a month ago. Still learning how to use most of the apps that came on the phone and finding new ones that I like. Over the weekend used the voice input to program the GPS navigation. Worked great, I took a wrong turn because of a very similar name on the street before the turn.

I can "tether" my netbook to the phone and if I have a 3G signal, I have a modem link to the internet when I don't have WIFI connectibility. This was most of the reason for upgrading my phone to a data plan.

I use Verizon, so your plan may not support, YMMV...

For the most part I am happy with the phone. Gotta manage the features that are turned on, WIFI, Bluetooth, GPS, etc to control battery depletion.

If you like the X you will probably also like the Incredible, if you can find one. Availability has been hurt by component shortages (Samsung very conveniently isn't able to supply sufficient numbers of displays, though the Galaxy S quadruplets don't seem to be suffering from that problem).

Motorolas phone division just went out of business, fired most of their management and much of their senior staff, and are in the process of being acquired by Nokia.

I didn't think it was handsets. I thought the only thing affected, what Nokia was buying was Motorola's network-infrastructure manufacturing business.

I don't know if Verizon is still selling it, but STAY AWAY from the HTC Droid Eris. I have one and loved it until HTC decided it was ready to "upgrade" to Android 2.1 It turned the phone into a POS that needs to be reset daily. Sometimes 4-5 times. And it's not just me. A quick google will show it's a HUGE problem.

Verizon passes the buck to HTC who says, "We are working on it." Frankly, I don't think they give a crap because it's an "older" phone. So HTC can kiss my honky ass.

Still learning how to use most of the apps that came on the phone and finding new ones that I like.

My local Verizon store has a free monthly class where people can go to learn about all the features of their phones. Perhaps your local store does too, it might be something worth looking into.
