BLACK BOX
Introduction
Taking advantage of innovative technologies, FN Herstal has designed and built an easy to use Black Box that acts as a weapon manager for efficient protection in day-to-day operations.
The FN Black Box stores information that allows preventive maintenance and facilitates corrective maintenance, which greatly increases weapon reliability and availability.
Description
The FN Black Box is a molded module that fits in any weapon type.
It features a non-replaceable battery that has a remarkable service life of 10 years and a recording capacity of 100,000 rounds.
Main FunctionsMaintenance Logistics
The FN Black Box:
detects/discriminates/counts shots
measures burst rates and burst lengths
records firing sequences
detects stoppages due to failures to cycle
The armorer can therefore anticipate necessary maintenance actions and consult all previous maintenance operations when and as required.
Operational Logistics
In operation, the FN Black Box can transmit the number of rounds fired through the Armatronics™ communication channels with the soldier system.
The upper command level can therefore follow up the ammunition supply of the squad during a mission.
Weapon Identification
The FN Black Box contains the identification number of the weapon and can therefore indirectly identify the soldier.
When coupled to a GPS, the FN Black Box can transmit its identification and localization data to the upper level command through the communication equipment of the soldier.
