The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Going Gear Premium Fire Kit

Post by Cybrludite »

*LINK* This is basically a BOAT (bug out altoid tin) which is focused solely on firestarting. It's an unmarked & painted altoid tin, held closed with a ranger band. (AKA a slice of bicycle tire tube)

It's stuffed to the gills with handy fire starting goodness. I'm thinking of polishing up the inside of the lid to use as a back-up signal mirror.

For tinder it's got steel wool, vaseline soaked cotton balls, a piece of wax & sawdust firestarter, a piece of lighter knot, and some char cloth.

As for fire sources, it's got a capsule lighter, a book of matches, a bit of hacksaw blade, and one of their "misch metal" firesteels.

By the way, do not try out the firesteel inside. The video (*LINK*) of them showing these off do not exaggerate. They also feel noticeably heavier than a normal firesteel
The capsule lighter feels a little light compared to the smaller County Comm peanut lighter, but it seems rugged enough. Compared to their basic kit, it drops the duct tape, and adds the matches, steel wool, & char cloth. Price compared to the components seems a little high at appx $15, but not excessively so.
