Pattern Estimating Shotgun Laser?

Post by Durham68 »

Does anyone know if there is a laser built for tactical or HD shotguns that projects the estimated pattern onto the target? Maybe a large center dot with a ring of smaller dots angled slightly out to project a larger pattern the further out the target. Or a single bright center dot with a dimmer, yet visible, ring around it (again increasing in size as distance from the target increases).

I know, I know. I was thinking something that could either be used in addition to a flashlight that had a wider beam... or if used without a flashlight, it wouldn't foul up one's night vision.

Is it that lame of an idea? Too mall ninja for you NPR?

I don't care for their acronym. When you find what you are looking for, you should call it the Shotgun Mounted Illuminated Lethality Estimator, or SMILE (wait for flash).....

I ran that one past my father in law who likes guns and loves word play. He thought it was excellent.

I haven't found one yet. Any ideas on how to put one together DIY?

Laser pointers taped together and jammed in the bore? Or, small laser pointers inserted into a spent shell?

A bunch of laser pointer rigged up with some way to adjust the spread would work... but I was thinking of an actual continuous ring. Like the Sur-c I linked to above, but with a brightly defined ring around the outside that is adjustable for spread.

Seems simple enough to do with two or three lasers and a lens or two. But I don't know the first thing about optics.
