CAA announces the Countdown Mag

Command Arms Accessories is pleased to announce the first polymer magazine from CAA, the CountDown Magazine (CDMAG).
Always know how many rounds are left at a glance with the new CountDown Magazine. The innovative NEW Count Down magazine from CAA has a visual, color-coded indicator showing the exact number of rounds left in the magazine.
30-20 rounds have a green background 19-10 rounds have a yellow back ground and 9-1 rounds have a red background. In addition, there is a second indicator on the bottom of the magazine so you always grab a full magazine.
The numbers are self illuminated for low light conditions and the operator does not have to shift positions to see the indicator. The magazine and round count indicator are both ambidextrous and ergonomic.
The mechanism does not interfere with the disassembly of the magazine.
This lightweight 30 round polymer .223 AR15 magazine offers 100% reliability with a non-tilting stable follower and a corrosion resistant stainless steel spring.

Meh. Just load a few tracers into the mag first. All the visual indicator you'll ever need.

Too gimicky for me, I'll go with the Mag-Pul P-Mag with the window and the colored mag spring wire loop. Simple and fail safe.
If it's too dark to see the wire and I'm not sure how many are left, it's time to change the mag.

How hard would it be to integrate a sort of micro-encoder to the mag floorplate that interfaces with the gun itself when it is inserted, that puts number of rounds left in the magazine into a corner of your holographic sight?
Using RFID technology, you could have the magazine itself report back to your optic how many rounds were in it. The only issue I could see is preventing spare mags from cross-talking on the RFID channel. Perhaps a switch that is activated when the mag is inserted that initiates the RFID data channel.
Hmm, where are those patent applications?

no need for RFID, the mags lock into place so there is a physical connection... would just be a matter of electrodes being clean.

Neat, but the mags are going to cost at least $80 apiece, if not more.
Just a tad TUBAR, but if they are reliable mags anyway, it is a fun thing to have.

In the field. In some turd-world shithole that's either too dry or too wet. I think the RFID might be the better choice.

As a former C3CM type, I find the idea of having multiple RFID tags on every member of a unit a fine idea. For the other side.
Just think of the possibilities for intrusion detection, smart fusing of booby traps, activating grids for free fire by the Red Legs...
If you were going to do something like this, I'd go with a hardwired physical connection.
Or just OST it and load tracer as the last 2-3 rounds to come out of the mag.
