.308 AR Mags

So, how do the various AR mags for .308 line up? I wondered over in Doc Russia's thread, but didn't want to hijack it. I looked up Magpul's PMags in .308, I gather they're for the Stoner SR25 fit:

What else is there in various fits? I thought I read that Armalite recently changed their magazine type/fit from one to another. Has it standardized?

I think Armalite is going SR25 pattern due to the popularity and availability of PMags. That should be a good thing. I think if the military went to a .308 AR as a DM rifle, the manufacturers would standardize, but as it sits with the M14 filling that role I don't see it happening.

Hmmm, doing some reading around, it looks like Armalite went with a modified M14 mag design, while DPMS and everybody else went with the Stoner design. Armalite changed gears and switched to the Stoner design as well, I guess. Seems odd that Armalite would go with something other than the original Stoner design, since they claim to be the only "real" AR10. Please correct me if I'm in error.

Sorry for the confusion. The AR10B is the original design using the Stoner magazine, while the AR10A runs the SR25/PMag pattern mag system. It seems Noveski is planning to go that route as well.

I went a different route with the Rock River LAR-8 which uses the well established, tried, and true FN/FAL metric magazines which are plentiful and less expensive.

I naturally have the older Armalite that takes modified M14 mags. I believe it was done originally for logistical purposes. If the military picked up the AR10 the mags were in stock already. You can make them fit both with a bit of creative modding. IIRC Armalite will/would convert your M14 mags for ya. Other than the location of the mag catch they fit fine.
