I think that these are more to replace/update the Sigma series than the M&P series. By most accounts the second model of Sigmas were decent.

Decent? >5K RDS w/out FTF, FTE, stovepipe, etc. I can't make the damn thing stop running no matter what I feed it. Well, there was a dented primer on one round that didn't go off, but that was 1 round out of about 2,000 white box refurb crap ammo.

I do know that the M&P shoots so well in my hand it's scary. I'm actually looking at the M&P in .45ACP.

I read somewhere that these more or less *are* Sigmas, just rebranded and slightly tarted up.

I held the M&P in .45 (mild hijack) at the ELGS today (mild brag), and I was just so impressed again with how the gun feels in my hand. Great balance, much more so than the Sig P220 I want.
