The Gun Counter

I decided to replace the flimsy tupperware stock on my Savage. Yesterday, a skinny box arrived with a pre-finished Boyd's JRS Classic. The action was a drop in fit, but the blind magazine offered up some difficulties. My rifle is a 111 .30-06 with a center-feed blind box. I'd read horror stories of them being actually spot-welded into the stock, but mine came out alright. The blind mag has no floorplate though. The factory stock has a groove for the follower spring to rest in, and slots to hold the box in place. The new stock does not have either of these. I may be able to make pictures availible later tonight.

As of now, I'm thinking of fashioning a floorplate, so that the mag spring and magazine box stay together, then expoying the box to the bottom of the frame to hold it in place. I don't plan on needing to remove the magazine at any point again. Any thoughts on this, suggestions for a floorplate, or better ideas? I'd like to avoid gunsmith fitting if I can, the smith in the area sucks, and he's expensive.

Trick for getting barreled actions out of the stock after bedding: stick 'em in a deep freeze. The metal contraction usually breaks the bond.

Go watch the full video he has, very informative, especially about inletting for bedding. The freezer treatment is for guns that refuse to let go(because Devcon got where it shouldn't, or you weren't as good with the release agent as you should have).

Outstanding info. I do intend to bed the stock, my concern at first was the magazine, which was NOT attached to the action in any way, shape, or form. I secured that by making a floorplate out of plastic, and secured with paracord, then filled the space with a folded piece of plastic. It holds in place now, and I may bed it in place in a few days, but not just yet.

The reason for that is I'm waiting on a set of screws from Brownells-I knew this upon ordering the stock, but apparently the synthetic stock screws are too short for the action to fit. I'm assuming that wood and wood laminate stocks require a thicker amount of material for the recoil lug and action for strength. I can't bed the action until those screws come, to be sure that the action does, indeed fit.
