The duct tape is simply the adhesive to keep the project together. Its easy, its cheap, it seems to work ok. Did I mention its cheap.

Hrm. Let me cogitate. As a former designer of body armor I have a few suggestions I will post later.
Congrats you are a touch better than Level IIIa!

See if you can find some pieces of UHMW polyethlene. I recall seeing a thread somewhere where a 1/2 inch (I think) sheet stopped a .45 ball round.

We just defeated 62 gr 5.56 penetrator rounds with the new revision.
We also stopped 123gr 7.62x39FMJ AND 147 gr 7.62x54 FMJ with steel core from 25 yards.
As well as a 3" 1 1/8 oz slug from a 28" barrel and a 150 grain 7mm Mag also from 25 yards.
Downside is it is 2 5/8" thick and a 6x9 "plate" weighs about 9 lbs

"Slab." "Slab" is the word you're looking for.Precision wrote:... and a 6x9 "plate" weighs about 9 lbs
Neat though! Keep going until you can stop a .50, too!

The stepson here: The news that we have (in my mind) now stopped up to a decent caliber (7.62x54R) at a fairly, and for all practical purposes, safe distance (25 yards). Indeed the items needed to design the plates, can pretty much be found in your garage, or local store.
I believe we are now taking this in a direction that will require some more material gathering that just walking into lowe's with $20. And certainly not just duct tape, I think that was answered long ago.
I don't know about my father, but I intend on getting the best steel I can possibly get my hands on, that doesn't need to be purchased in a bulk sheet. I believe we have decided to go with a lager plate. 10''x12'' seems to be a good size. We have gone from a head to head face off, to work together and perform much needed progress.
I'm hoping to shave about an 1" off the thickness our current plate to make it about 1.5" thick, to me the weight hasn't been an issue, but since we are now looking at a bigger plate it could be an issue.
Anyways Im sure the pictures from today will be uploaded soon, and between gathering better materials, and unpredictability of my mom, it may be a bit longer before the next round. But love to hear everyone input, or insight in the matter.

It's not armor plate, but it's a lot tougher than the mild steel you will get at the hardware store, and it comes pre-sheared in convenient sizes.
