Had anybody tried that trick in my tire shop, they would have been shown the door.

It seems to be a fairly common method. The other common method involving a strap is also dangerous. Then there's bead seaters like the Cheetah, but they're pricey(seem easy enough to make though)..
Yes, most of the time, just pushing enough compressed air through using a blow gun or a clip on tire filler with the valve core removed will usually be enough, but when you're A) talking about large tires and B)in the middle of nowhere...
Course, you could always go with beadlocks, but they're not road legal for the most part.

Hmm, just did some checking.
There are now DOT approved Beadlocks.
Color me surprised. Every time I remember seeing them for sale, they all seemed to be labeled "Off road use only, not DOT approved".
<Edit> just found this. Interesting reading about Beadlocks and street use. Apparently it's case of manufacturers worrying what idiot customers doing. I will say I don't like the idea of beadlocks on street driven cars for exactly the reason mentioned - it's something else to go wrong
