A Layered Approach to Firestarting

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

"Does anyone know how to start a fire?"
"Yeah, I've got a match."
"Wait, I have a road flare, use that!"
"Hang on..." [pulls lint from fish-white belly button]
"You guys suck! Just use a candle!"
"Why don't we all just have sex? We'll be just as warm."
"Just use det cord, dammit!"
"Why use det cord when you have C4?"
"Because of the Tang Dynasty."
"Dude, are you HIGH?"
"Look, a butterfly!"
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

Well, you did ask for a layered approach. We layer it on good and thick...

I've heard of people carrying a pencil sharpener, and a small tobacco pouch full of shavings. With the sharpener, as long as you can find small sticks, you gots tinder.

I'm honestly surprised nobody mentioned cupcake firestarters.

Easy to make, and all you need really is cupcake wrappers, sawdust, and parafin. An even simpler version uses egg cartons instead of cupcake pans and wrappers.

I'm a big fan of the magnesium fire starters; I always keep one in my outdoor gear bag.

I'll have to remember that, shredded paper is somewhat easier to come by than hardwood sawdust.

Lightered pine splinter fire starting kit. From The Frugal Outdoorsman.

Junior Doughty is a die-hard southern Democrat, but he's a hell of a outdoorsman, and a highly experienced reloader. He's probably forgotten more about cast bullet reloading than most of us have learned.

I always have flares, but 3-5 gal of #1 fuel oil is the best, and a good back up plan is a propane torch, butane lighters, water proof matches, several fire-starters, including wax, various fats, etc.
Being cold sucks, just ask any Alaskan how to start a fire and you will get a how to in short order .
