I want to buy a kel-tec sub-2000

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

Don't those have some problems?
Availability and price, for starters.

I was being nice.

The AWB really boned them good. But the whole thing seems to be a fiddly, flaky design centered around the magazine, which is the whole reason for the design to exist. And the magazine itself is problematic, fiddly, expensive, not entirely reliable (I've seen pictures of it *bending* cartridge casings), depending on just right tension levels in powerful springs, with a tendency to irretrievably self-disassemble if mishandled. (Yes, I had some interest in this stuff way back when.) And with less than the capacity of two conventional Glock stick mags. Good luck carrying and dealing with (affording?) spare Calico mags. The *only* advantage to the design is being able to go a little bit longer before the first reload. Everything else is worse than conventional designs.

I don't know if they had a bunch of problems or not, I don't recall; but the 10rd mag law nearly put the company out of business. Since it sunsetted, they have made something of a comeback.

The helical magazine design is loosely based off the one for the GAU-8, IIRC. But they are pricey.

Pretty sure my MOD has one in stock. Not sure what mag type it has. Pretty sure it is a 9mm.

I have a .40 with glock mags. I use it as a truck gun.

Pros:
mag compatibility with carry weapon
16 in barrel gives way better knock down
folding feature makes for easier concealing/transport
impossible to open and keep chambered
does not fire if opened with round chambered

cons
Sights SUCK ROCKS - without shooting it a fair amount I can miss by 3 feet at 75yds
impossible to open and keep chambered
chambering mechanism is odd
no easy way to add a scope - youtube has answers
no place for cheek weld so you bang your cheek against the metal tube - pipe insulation mitigates that

IIRC - I paid about $200 for mine used so well worth it. Especially when I get the scope situation sorted out.

Have you seen the guy who has a screen door spring hinge as his red dot mount? It opens on fold and pops into place when deployed.

That is my scope answer when I get the time and money for an additional red dot.

I just picked up a NIB example today, in .40 and configured for Sig mags. More information as it becomes available.

With the Sub2K, in each caliber, all of the non-Glock-mag versions differ only by 1 part related to the mag catch. You can buy the one you need from their website, but if you ask their customer service for one they will send you the one you need for free. Very nice.

Anyone else think Ruger should acquire Kel-Tec and turn it into their "skunk works"...

Admittedly, it may be cheaper to just keep stealing the designs, but they have an innovation problem, but a decent manufacturing system.

Ruger can piss up a rope, not to mention George is VERY unlikely to sell. He makes a mint, but more importantly he LOVES what he is doing.

Oh and then being an employee of Ruger would KILL off the skunk works concept entirely. George has the mad scientist thing going that Ruger would strangle out in minutes.
