Advice on Sighting Systems

The place for general talk about gun, shooting, loading, camping, survival, and preparedness related tools and gear, as well as gear technology discussion, gear reviews, and gear specific "range reports" (all other types of gear should be on the back porch).

What do you want to teach them?

Marksmanship? Go with a set of quality peep sights and move up from there.

Defensive use of a firearm? Go with either an "express sight" type rifle sight or a red dot.

There are no replacements for fundamentals, but bullseye shooting has little correlation to defensive shooting.
You can teach the basics(within 50 yards) with little more than a front bead sight, but again it depends on where you want to go from there.

I want to teach firearm safety, and that it's fun to hit stuff 'way over there. If they show an interest, and want to stay with it, then we dig out the Savage 93, or Papa's 10/22, or Grandma's Marlin 39, and work on sight picture/breath control/trigger squeeze.

But my main goal is to teach them SAFE handling of a firearm that's their size, and letting them have fun.

As I said, see if they take the bait. If they do, set the hook and reel them in!
