Chrono choices

Post by blackeagle603 »

Ok, I'm thinking I'm a couple decades past due for to buy a chronograph. Besides my curiousity is getting the better of me. :-)

What's the collective wisdom here about chronos? Any models or brands to absolutely avoid?

Any compelling values out there?

Looking at the Midway flyer and (as usual) see too many choices and have not enough direct experience to sort the wheat from the chaff.

fwiw, I'll be using it a lot at an indoor range. I hear tell that's a significant factor in comparing various makers performance. I'm a cheapskate so the units in the $90-130 range look like they'd fit the current budget.

The Chrony's are a good deal and accurate as long as you get them completely unfolded.
Plus they're easy to mount on a camera tripod.

The Oehler's are excellent if you can find one, they're out of production right now.

Whatever you get, the "printer" models are worth the money.

I use the Chrony Brand, F1 and F3, both are great, and can survive being hit by a bullet sometimes even.

Any advice/issues about using indoors?

Make sure you have adequate lighting or it won't pick up the bullets.

Avoid fluorescent overhead lights. Since Chronies work by timing the occurrence of light intensity changes between the front and back pickups, flickering lights will wreak havoc.
