B.O.B. or "Go" bag-maintenance reminder

Although there are conflicting schools of thought about sheltering in place during a disaster or bailing and heading for some safer locale I do keep what I refer to as my emergency bags. I actually have two of them. One is a rather extensive ruck with literally a complete campsite and related gear. The other more likely bag is kept in my truck and would enable me to make it from wherever I am to any point within a three day drive in relative comfort and safety.

Being that it was a slow day round the old homestead today I took the bags apart to review their contents. I was surprised at how many things had expiration dates long since past.
This included batteries and meds and emergency foodstuffs.

I must discipline myself to change out these date perishable items on some regular schedule. Perhaps I'll tie that date to the change of batteries in my home fire detectors.

Just as a data point , I re-assembled these kits/bags in 1994. They were originally put together after 9/11/01. Time goes by...

Perhaps you should check your emergency gear as well.

Over at Zombie Squad, they call that an INCH bag. Short for "I'm Never Coming Home".

The other more likely bag is kept in my truck and would enable me to make it from wherever I am to any point within a three day drive in relative comfort and safety.

I've got a 2-3 day basic kit in the back pocket of my bookbag, an assortment of small useful tools as part of my EDC, and some more gear in my truck. The truck kit has heavy duty jumper cables, tire iron & jack (The crank for the jack, being too long for the bag, is wedged next to the driver side back door), a mess kit, a 2400 calorie lifeboat ration, a cheap pair of binoculars, and a poncho. I need to add a change of clothes to this kit. I figure a pack of heavy socks, a pack of shorts, a pack of dark colored t-shirts, and a pair of jeans should do for that. Maybe one of those 511 packable windbreakers as well. I moved the jack from it's mount under the back seat after Gustav. Driving back to New Orleans through the remnants of the storm I realized that if I got a flat, I'd have to unload the cab of my truck (including my guns) in a blinding rainstorm to get at the damn thing.

I should put together an INCH-type bag based on my ALICE pack, but I also use that Big Green Tick as my suitcase.
