Detroit Diesel 12.5KW railroad genset salvaged from old reefer cars- DD 2-71 two-stroke motor, they run great on veggie oil or darn near anything that will burn. Loud and heavy but run forever. About $3K plus freight. Getting hard to find anymore though.

Or for that matter, you can really easily make one with $50 worth of parts and an hour or so.
I would not encourage him to build a full wave adjustable rectifier, unless he's "feeling froggy". Too cheap and easy to buy one.

That would be my recommendation, also.
Ideal setup:
Buy a Xantrex Freedom SW-2012 inverter/charger. Link It has a 2000 watt pure sine wave output, a 30amp tranfer relay, and a 100 amp 3 stage battery charger that can be set for flooded cell, gel cell, or AGM batteries.
Have a battery bank consisting of eight L16 flooded batteries in series-parallel for 1600 amp-hrs @12vdc.
Have a high quality 5000 watt generator, with a full power switch so that you can set the output for full power single phase 120 volt.
You now have a kick-ass backup genverter system.
Now THAT'S a system I'd LOVE to have, but I can probably create something CLOSE (like horseshoes and hand-grenades) to make a better system than I already have, OTHER than using my relatively low-powered solar-panel system on my RV.
I can probably upgrade my current system relatively cheaply just by changing a few components, even though it's not close to a 5000 watt system (which we don't really need at THIS TIME).
What most people have a problem with is the thought process of COMBINING the WATTAGE of the components rather than being concerned about the VOLTAGE when figuring out what they NEEDED to build a new system to fulfill their needs.
POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.

I always thought this was pretty interesting idea for a generator, if fuel got scarce. It would need a proper safety valve, and a way to regulate speed though, and an old water heater would probably last longer.
