Interesting--a guy at the Idaho National Laboratory has developed a sight which allows one to focus on the target and front sight simultaneously. Uses zone plates, sounds like a Fresnel lens. Found via the Firearms Blog:

Make it a replacement fit for a standard A2 rear sight appeture and I'm in......
