0% receivers

Post by blackeagle603 »

80% lowers need not apply: .... upgrade to the Ghost Gunner 3 that allows GG3 owners to turn “0% receivers” – regular blocks of aluminum – into AR-15 receivers, and possibly pistol frames and other components.
<snip>
Ghost Gunner 3, a software update and a new set of fixtures will allow you to start making your own lowers at home.

Going to be like making receivers out of cold butter unless you've got a way to anodize them.

Anodizing can be done at home with battery acid, desmut(ferric chloride) and an appropriate power supply.

Type Ii anodizing, which is generally used on commercial ARs, as its a much thicker coating, isn't really possible at home, as it's generally done at much higher power, and requiring a chilled acid bath.

Isn't that going to depend on what alloy is used?

re: anodizing
You can alodine it easily for some corrosion resistance but that's not as tough a coating.

This is true, or paint it or lots of things. Uncoated Aluminum is used all over the place and is not a problem mostly. It has a very tightly bound oxidation layer that protects what is under it. If it is in an environment where that layer gets stripped, then it corroded quickly, not sure that would apply here.

It depends. The higher strength alloys (like might be used in an AR receiver) can be susceptible to intergranular corrosion. In that event, alodine and a good tough paint finish might go a long way towards protecting the material.

But not to put too fine a point on it, corrosion is really the least of all concerns here given that the purpose of the GG3 is to produce a functional weapon free from government interference. In a realistic scenario where the weapon might be needed, the average life expectancy of the user is going to be less than that of the weapon regardless of how little is done to protect it from corrosion and wear.

Orrrr

Just make the lower from something else, like 416.
