What's the easiest barrel steel to machine if you have a drill press and shop press, then? 4140? As for adding corrosion or wear resistance via the now in-vogue nitriding process, I'm pretty sure my basement isn't set up for that.

Could you do something like they do bushmaster barrels EDM the rifling ?

Could you EDM the rifling after gun drilling the barrel blank, then heat treating it ala bushmaster ?

EDM is limited by electrode length a sub 1/4" diameter by 2 foot long electrode, even if made from copper tungsten, is going to have too much flex for horizontal applications, and an edm with enough z axis stroke to do it vertically is going to be $$$$$.

This is why you only really see edm barrels in pistols.

I whish a " gun drill " set up wasn't so expensive . I remember using them for drilling stems for valves.
