The Gun Counter

Been thinking about building an AR for hog hunting and the .277 Wolverine has caught my eye.
Other then the barrel everything else is the same.
Has any one got some hands on time with the .277 Wolverine?

Probably have to go to someplace like arfcom to find anybody who's actually used one. I'm not sure what the Wolverine gets you over 300BLK except for maybe an extra 100 or so fps with equal weight bullets, and the joy of not being able to buy factory ammo. And I guess the ability to run lighter bullets.

Basic Range Results

So far, using a 5R rifled 16" AR barrel, we are seeing Sub-MOA groups and the following results from the following bullets in handloads. The results are quite exciting! Please visit the 277 Wolverine Forum here where you will find substantial load data posted by our shooters.

•85 grain MPG - 2750fps
•90 grain TNT - 2700fps
•95 grain TTSX - 2600fps
•100 grain Accubond - 2600fps
•110 grain Sierra Pro-Hunter - 2500fps
•110 grain Hornady V-Max - 2500fps

I meant ammunition that I could actually go to a store and find. If it exists, there's probably somebody somewhere loading for it.

What does it do that the 6.8 SPC doesn't?

The .277 Wolverine provides medium bore (.277") performance exceeding the parent 5.56x45 cartridge and the 300 BLK while approaching the power of the larger 6.8 SPC - which requires larger cases and dedicated components (e.g., bolt and magazines).

Everybody to his own kick, as the philosopher said. I'd be more apt to build a .264 LBC/6.5 Grendel, or a Six5 (based on a 6.8 SPC case, trimmed 2mm and necked down to .264). Or maybe a .25/45.

Unless you plan on going subsonic, it seems that you get better performance with bullets that are closer to optimum weight for the caliber. (I may be wrong, but I am NOT uncertain!)

Why not just move up to an ar10?

Weight, mostly. The AR 10s that I've handled had the ergonomics of an oak 4x8.

I like the .277 Spartan name, but doesn't everyone have something called a Spartan this or that already.

Why not go with a larger case cartidge? That's simple. The only thing I need is a barrel and ammo. Everything else is the same as an AR15 in 5.56. Same Mags, BCG, upper and lower.
I also have the problem with my neck and sholder from the cancer treatments. I can only shoot so much before I realy start to hurt. The recoil of the .277 Wolverine is not much more then the 5.56, but has the extra power to take bigger bame.
The maine use for this rifle will be hog hunting.
Right now all I need is a barrel to build the rifle.
