Things Not To Do With A Muzzleloader

Post by Darrell »

Iraqveteran8888 does some no-nos with a muzzleloader--double charge of black powder, filling the barrel with black powder and two balls, then some smokeless powder... very um, educational:

A proof charge with a muzzleloader is a 2X charge of powder and two balls. Getting stupid with it is not a proof charge.

FWIW, my .50 cal flintlocks use 70 gr. of 2F powder, and a .490 round ball, although I have been known to hunt squirrels with a 50 gr. charge of 3F.
But there ain't many troubles that a man caint fix, with seven hundred dollars and a thirty ought six."

A war shot from my .50 caplock is 85 of 777 behind a .490 roundball or a 290gr Powerbelt. 50 grains of 777 is my dorking around load.

I am somehow less bothered by the destruction of two CVA rifles than I am about the waste of H110....

I have done everything I ever needed to do with a muzzleloader with one of two loads. 90 grains of 2F and a 500 grain conical was my deer-slayer, and 60 grains of 2F under a round ball was my accuracy load. And, I once took a deer with that round-ball load because he presented himself while I was carrying it.

They did not prove anything, except they could knowingly destroy powder and barrels. Everything they did was done 40 plus years ago, under far more scientific conditions, and documented by an acquaintance of mine, and published.

I can't really contribute much to the thread, just thought y'all might find it interesting. Sure blowed up real good, though, huh?

The closest I can come: I went shooting with my twin brother once many years ago, with his Hawken BP replica. I forgot to ram the ball down the barrel one time, and realized what I'd done when I pulled the trigger and it sounded different. I could see the ball arc downrange toward the target. Didn't seem to hurt the gun, though.

Trashing perfectly good firearms and gunpowder never struck me as funny.

One item on my To-Do list is to make a series of instructional YouTube videos on how to shoot a muzzle-loading firearm properly. Probably cover each MLAIC event separately...yes, including matchlock. There are some tricks of the trade with those that most people aren't aware of, and I think interest will pick up in about 10 years.

Yes, please! I can't shoot BP at my local (indoor) range, but there are other (outdoor) clubs where it's possible. Definitely on my "to-try" list.
