"Medium bore, moderate velocity"

Combine that, with handloading, will make for some very cheap shooting. :D
You guys keep coming up with ways for me to spend money on the Senior Minions!

Doing a little research during a slack period at work today, I came up with the following candidates:

.30/30 AI
.32 Winchester Special
.32-40
.35 Remington
.375 Winchester
.38-55

Any that I missed?

These all seem to be chambered in either lever-actions or break-open single-shots. I'm thinking that a lever gun, with a forward-mounted (LER) scope would be a great short-range/brush gun, right? And heat-treated cast bullets should be capable of around 2000 fps, without leading or stripping in the rifling? And with the right bullet, should handle deer and hogs at <150 yards?

This is gonna get expensive, isn't it?

I vote "1 of each." 8-)

30-30 AI is on my bucket list. With Hornady Flextip spire points and LEVERevolution Powder that could get really interesting to test. Seems like it would have potential to approach 308-ish territory.

Just for the record, you ARE NOT helping! Since I posted this I've gotten texts from both Senior Minions who think it's a great idea. Don't we have an age restriction or something on here???

If you were doing it, from scratch, which ONE would you pick?

Probably whichever was the first used piece to show up looking good at a decent price at my LMOD or local pawnshop. But I'm impulsive that way. Got a nice old 336 (30-30) that way before the Obama madness took the market over.

I've always kinda disliked Marlins, because they tend to kick brass back in my face (being a lefty has it's drawbacks, and SM1 shoots lefty, because she's left eye dominant).

But of all of them, it seems that the .35 Remington would be the answer to a maiden's prayer, wouldn't it?

Crap, this is gonna cost me a bundle, isn't it???

(Besides, whatever I get, I'm gonna hafta get at least two, more likely four of them. I've got a junior minion bucking for promotion, remember???)

The .38-55 is a sweet cartridge for lead bullets. I have one in an single shot and would love to have one in that caliber in a lever gun.

Do you reload for it? (He asked, anxiously). Lead or jacketed bullets?

Although a 45-70 is my choice , a 38-55 would work its a really good medium bore and is very flexable cartridge .

I reload lead for the .35-55, both smokeless and black powder. Yes, the lever actions are expensive!
