I went to the range today [7/24/08] and had my best range day yet!

I spent a good while shooting 150GR commercial .30-06 from my Mossberg 100 ATR w/ the factory 3-9x40. At 50 yards, shooting 5-shot strings with 1 minute between shots to let the barrel cool, I shot under 1 1/2” groups all morning!

When I ran out of 150GR, I moved up to 165 grain and out to 100 yards. At the 100-yard mark, every group was well under 2”. While I never did break a 1 1/2” group, I did group once at 1 5/8” center-to-center on a six-shot group. (I guess an extra round snuck in there by mistake.)

I celebrated by shooting the iron ‘gong’ plate at 200 yards, and I hit it so many times the thing flew off the mount! All in all, a great day.

For a factory rifle & factory ammo, that's not bad accuracy at all; plenty good enough to put meat in the freezer.

Not bad for an inexpensive rifle that hasn't been on the market long. Were you shooting off a rest or sandbags or something else?

Have you tried 180 gr yet? The rifle might like the longer bullet. I don't know your twist rate, nor am I an expert on twist rate and bullet weight optimization for .30-06. It seems that as you increased your weight and distance, your group size didn't grow much, so I'm thinking longer bullets are better. I'd like to see the performance of 150's at 100 yds to be sure.

I almost feel sorry for any deer that wanders in front of your rifle. Its death will be quick.
