Been feeling nostalgic...
Best one I could think of would be a Garand - maybe a K31

Re: Modern saddle gun
I love both of mine (for different reasons)!!!
My M1 Garand is AWESOME, but I also LOVE my K31 (but HATE paying for their special, VERY HIGH QUALITY ammo)!!! I only wish we had the same quality control over the vast quantities of ammo in .30-06, as they do for their ammo (without paying TWO arms AND A LEG)!!!

POLITICIANS & DIAPERS NEED TO BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON
A person properly schooled in right and wrong is safe with any weapon. A person with no idea of good and evil is unsafe with a knitting needle, or the cap from a ballpoint pen.
I remain pessimistic given the way BATF and the anti gun crowd have become tape worms in the guts of the Republic. - toad

Mike, I've had very good luck with Prvi 7.5x55, if you want to try something different.

Re: Modern saddle gun
I've never ridden a horse, but I imagine that reloading on horseback might not be so easy. So, I would want something with a much higher capacity than a Garand or K-31. Preferably semi-auto. I wouldn't expect to be taking any long range shots from horseback either, so make mine an AK.

I ride and shooting from a horse is a completely different set of issues from shooting on the ground . I would go with a nice 1895 Marlin Cowboy and a tang sight.

Trying to pack/draw something as "snaggy" as an AK on a saddle wouldn't be a good idea, IMO.

This is where Mini-14s and Mini-Thirtys come into play.
Nobody gives a crap about minute of angle on the back of a moving saddle.
Put a low profile red dot on it, and you're pretty much done.

I don't think that my AK is necessarily any snaggier than any other rifle with a big magazine.

Re: Modern saddle gun
As someone who has owned horses in the past, the real issue isn't the rifle. It's training the horse to tolerate you shooting from its back. Some horses simply won't do it.

Admittedly, it's been far too long, but all our working horses were trained to stand steady while being fired from. It was one of the requirements...
Things have changed, I think, though... (I imagine, even in MT...)
