Scope Bases

I have a Winchester 70 in 30.06 that is currently sporting a cheapo Bushnell scope. It deserves something better. Right now there are Weaver bases on the gun.

At what point does a gun's recoil negatively impact scope bases? I know dovetail mounts are more stable, but are they warranted for an .06?

I think you'd have to run a lot of heavy '06 loads through a really light rifle before the Weaver bases caused trouble. As long as they're mounted correctly, (and loc-tited in place), they shouldn't be as issue. I have a friend in Wyoming (old service buddy) who has an almost identical set up, that he's used for at least 25 years, without problems.

Of course, the whole thing may shit the bed tomorrow, just because I posted this.

If you wanted to switch out scopes just do so and don't worry about getting new rings and base(s)...

The two guns that play havoc with scopes are of course the super uber magnums like .500 NE etc. and believe it or not air rifles because of their compacted movement...I've seen cheap scopes destroyed by both and been a participant in a number them myself...

I've had good luck with these. I currently have them on my T/C Encore .30-06, and they've stood up to 200gr. SMK's.

I mount and boresight rifles and shotguns for a living(about half of all my work is just that) so I can say that if they are mounted properly you should have no trouble with rings and bases. The majority of the problem I have had come in was because they never used loctite or OVERtightened the bases.

Most people will really crank down on the bases or rings, believing that it will have a stronger holt. In reality all you are doing is putting more strain on the threads, to the point that the threads will fail(this may be after one shot or a hundred shots). All you have to do is use the blue colored loctite(why it comes in a red bottle is a mystery to me) and snug the screws.

I can do this with just the exact pressure of my forefinger, holding the top of the allen/torx wrench with the other forefinger. This is because I have done it very often, but if you are unsure of your ability or just want to make sure you have the proper torque(which is the main point to my arguement here), Brownells sells the torque wrenches you would need.
