Please Tell Me I Didn't Just Screw Up
Please Tell Me I Didn't Just Screw Up
First a little back history. My first pistol was a Llama 1911 I bought from a pawn shop. Turned out to be a piece of crap with a lot of problems that would cost more than a new gun to fix, so I traded it in for a revolver. That was 4 years ago and I've wanted another 1911 ever since. So today I went to Bass Pro Shops to buy a pair of shoes. While there I decided to look at guns. I ended up making an impulse purchase of a Springfield Armory 1911 A1. I was ecstatic until I got home and realized there was some negative reviews of it (at least older year models). Please tell me that I didn't just waste my money on another gun that will jam constantly and be unreliable (or do - I want the truth - I'm just not sure I can handle it).

I don't have advice... others will be along shortly. I just wanted to tell you that I'm right there with you. Buyer's remorse is an ugly thing, and I hope the gun is absolutely perfect for you!
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

You'll be fine. SA stands behind their work. So in the long run you'll be fine even if you do have problems.

workinwifdakids: Thanks. I hope so too. I really like it and can't wait to shoot it. It was just a lot of money to spend with out doing any homework. But it seemed so lonely in the gun case

Re: Please Tell Me I Didn't Just Screw Up
I can personally vouch for Springfield 1911s. I trust my life to one every day.
I did send one back because I wasn't happy with the trigger, they made it right and reimbursed me for the cost of sending the gun to them after I provided them with the receipt.
The turn around time was pretty short, too. less than 2 weeks.
Which model did you get? assuming it is a regular size or a champion, you should be just fine.
Before you decide to do any "improving" on your own be sure you read up on the task you wish to accomplish online first, or get Jerry Kunhausen's (?) book.
Don't buy a lot of hollow point ammunition with wide mouths before you try a single box of that type in the weapon. I loaded up some magtech flying ashtrays and found that sometimes the gun would balk at chambering them. This problem has disappeared with use, and I never have issues with ball ammo or small diameter openings like golden saber.
I get buyer's remorse every time I buy a gun. The next thing you know, I can't seem to justify getting rid of it, as I just love it so very , very much.
If guns still cost a hundred bucks we'd never balk at a purchase. Those days are gone for the most part and now we spend a LOT more time wondering if we have made a mistake. It will pass, and the bright light of true love will disperse the shadows of doubt.

If you are unwilling to give another man freedom in his life, do not expect to have it in your own.
It surely beats trying to figure out what the metrosexuals want ( a good hard kick in the nuts in my opinion, but that won't sell ice cream :D )- Highspeed

Which SA did you get? I've had a loaded version for years now and never had a problem, that wasn't crap ammo related. Several friends have other versions ranging from Mil-Spec to Operators to Champions, all have run without hitches.
My favorite story of his ended with "...and so he went out the back door in his bathrobe, flipped the AK to 'Afrikaner', and started hosing the baboons off his tennis court." - Tam

My stainless SA Mil-Spec runs like a champ.
The only downside is the magazines are garbage. I switched them out with Wilson Combat mags and have yet to have a problem.

If i remember correctly from reviews I've read, no 'flying ashtray' hollow points, and replace the mags that came with it, and you're good.

You didn't go wrong. I have the GI model - the bottom of the line - and it functions just fine. It takes anything I feed it - ball, hollow-point, semi-wadcutter.
