A 1911 for a Cadet

This summer my brother started at West Point. I never got him anything for graduating High School and getting into West Point, but when I bought an STI 1911 I thought that I would give my old 1911 to my brother. The gun in question is a Springfield armory 1911 with a new hammer, trigger, mainspring housing, double diamond grips, extended safety, beaver tail, and has been Gun-koted. In short it's functional but looks like crap. I am thinking of sending out the gun to be Duracoated with my Sig 225 at FBMG.

I was wondering if any of you had suggestions for improvements I could make to the gun to make it more presentable and unique. Perhaps some sort of grips or holster.

Maybe some custom grips w. the Westpoint seal/symbol etc on it? I realize price is always a factor, but if you can swing it, Ivory would be a good choice -- perhaps that's more in-line for graduating WP, however...

What would Patton do?

Patton would have a blued .357 S&W with real ivory grips, in a holster from El Paso Saddlery, to go along with his 4 3/4" Colt SAA in .45 Colt, also with ivory grips.

For a 1911 for a West Point Cadet, nothing says "appropriate grips" like ones inscribed with "BEAT NAVY"

We discussed this once before back at the old forum, so I'll submit my answer again :)

My best friend graduated from West Point in 1995, he was on the pistol team and got the Colt custom shop to manufacture custom 1911s for the entire team. (he has S/N: 001) The price was very reasonable. (then again, he got a bulk discount)

Call Colt, maybe they have a standard, my brother goes to West Point package.

I remember hearing at one point in time, West Point-ers could buy class pistols. I remember hearing it because I was part of a small group that wanted to get them for USNA (never happened). I would say wait until his class crest is designed, usually around winter of his freshman year, and have it, along with the West Point crest engraved on a 1911
