Good to know. I'm about to take my Ruger SRH in 454 down to 3".

No lathe, so thanks for the info.

Back on the topic of sights, I normally prefer Redfield style bases over Weaver bases, but I discovered that XS sights makes a slick little rear Weaver base with an integral ghost ring backup. I'd probably have to mount the scope just a little higher than I would like to, but it seems like a more elegant solution than having a separate back up sight that would have to be carried around.

Well, to tell the truth, I'm not entirely sure I would go with the extra fancy grade (pictured), let alone the exhibition grade that they have on sale now. Maybe the AA grade would be nice, especially if I went with the black DLC coating on the metal. Between glass bedding (with pillars) the stock, and the more modern metal finish, I think I would have something that would be fairly hunt-worthy under Alaskan conditions. Sure, the wood stock would pick up the odd ding here and there, but that is kind of par for the course, and it hasn't diminished my fondness for any of my other rifles. Truth be told, "meh" is the only reaction I've ever had towards a composite stock, and what is the point of building a custom rifle that doesn't inspire any emotion when I look at it? I might even end up with a little less money into it, as well.

Mmmm. Handsome stock. I bought a similar "second" stock blank from Richard's when I was last in the US. I'm saving it for a future project (probably a custom .257 Roberts AI on a Mauser '98 action by Kilic or FN, when I find one).

Home building a custom boltie has been on my dream sheet since I was a teen . Had the bug bad again last couple years -- esp to build a 6.5mm based laser of some sort (6.5-06 perhaps).

Was able to fight it off and get it down my wish list lately while prioritizing on "likely to banned" acquisitions. Now I'm back to cruising Gunbroker for suitable M98 and pre-64 actions.

Serves me right for hanging out here. Like an alcoholic hanging around a bar...
