Nice , as a side note I have picked up a couple, very under priced wheel guns.

Just the way they were called back then. Smith and Wesson designed them. Means .38 Special.

If you want, you can send for a factory letter with some historic info about your specific revolver. I got one for my Victory (a 1945).

I've been using this opportunity if low prices to snatch a few good underpriced revolvers too.

38 s&w came first, then 38 special-which was developed by s&w- so it was 38s&w special.
38s&w-aka 38/200, aka 38 colt police- is .360" whereas 38spl is .357".

Interesting side note- Colt refused to put their competitors name on their guns, so they made minor changes to the bullet profile and renamed them.
For example 32 S&W Long became 32 Colt New Police.
