I shoot 3 Gun.
I use: 1. An AR-15, nothing fancy, with a $50 red-dot sight on a carry handle adapter.
2. A Springfield 1911, mil-spec.
3. A Browning Auto-5, with an extension tube to make it 7+1.
I don't win. I don't go to the match to win. But if I had the best gear money could buy, it wouldn't mean I was going to win, anyway. This is about doing better than last time, getting in some practice, and having a great day at the range with like minded people.
I usually finish middle of the pack, and learn something every time. I hope that you aren't put off, and go out with the gear you have and try it. By the way, one of the shooters at our last match was using his CAS cart, a Winchester Model 1897, a Mini-14 ranch rifle, and a stock 1911. Looked like he had a good time to me.
Pitt County Wildlife Club will be having a Three Gun Match to support toys for Tots on Saturday , November 29th, 2008. http://www.pittcountywildlifeclub.org/index.htm
Matches are open to the public, and the event calendar is on the website. If you're in eastern North Carolina, this is a fun match for a good cause.

Re: BIT? - Poor Man's Practical Shooting
Why? Didn't WW2 combat soldiers have to reload? So have a forty round event with 5 charges for a Garand, 4 for a SMLE, 8 for a Mauser or a Krag-Jorgenson, two for a ST44 and penalize the 20 or 30 round mag people...MarkD wrote:The point I was making in my original post is that, from what I was told, stages are designed with high-cap semis in mind. A 90 shot stage doesn't sound like much when you have 30 round mags, it's a big deal with a Garand and 8-shot clips. If you were designing realistic stages for millsurp weapons the round count would be lower and still realistic.

Re: BIT? - Poor Man's Practical Shooting
For steel just make them thicker so that you get a “clunk” when hit but it won't go through...You could have them on very well greased hinges to flop over when hit and that could be a deciding factor for the outcome of the match? Like X rings in ISU target meets…Maybe have them balanced that only an upper body or a headshot will topple them…Bullspit wrote: This is a great idea. I would do it and I think if you wrote the stages to be simple but fun you would have a winner.
This would definitely be cheaper to gear up for than Cowboy Action Shooting. CAS requires two pistols, a rifle and a shotgun. As described this would be a match you could shoot with an SKS and a Nagant. What, 300.00?
I would shoot a carbine or Garand and the 1911, already have them.
What might be a problem would be target steel. The old rifles, with cheap ammo would be hard on steel. Sure you could shoot paper, but that removes the immediate feedback and takes a bit of the fun factor out.
You would have to have paper for the accuracy sections so that score and/or group size would be computed...
The Gunsite course was their tactical carbine or some such but we’d have to limit the physical stuff so some of the older or out of shape guys have a chance…crawl through a culvert, if you can, or take a X second/point penalty…
All modern guns would have to be a close to original issue as possible…there aren’t many WW1 or WW2 pistols out there that aren’t valued more for antiques then combat so take a modern .45, make it have an 15 pound or 20 pound trigger when cocked, fixed sights, NO work whatsoever to the mag well or ejection port, ambi-safeties, oversize levers or buttons, (US Firearms has two models of replica WW2 .45s)...Same for revolvers (S&W have brought out a replica 1917 pistol)...
Rifles may have replacement stocks with a separate division for composite materials but not bolt handles or triggers (unless set to original let off)…All rifles must be equipped with slings...Mausers have to be in 6.5, 7.92, 8mm with no reboring allowed to 7.62...
Maybe have a trench scenario where 1897 shotguns can compete without being relegated to single shot and a Remington or Browning semi for WW2 events…
It could be "fought" in any weather or season...so what if its raining, only makes it harder to see the targets...Only factor to consider might be extreme cold--say permitted to -20F but that's it...
If it took off the gun companies can bring back their old, obsolete (by modern standards) designs like S&W and US Firearms have done...Think of it, bare bones competition with no alterations allowed to the equipment and see who actually is the best battle rifle or pistol of WW1/2

What about a Mosin and a Nagant in one of those old school events?

Did they have a semi auto rifle at all? I couldn't find any in my research but they may have gotten some from Germany...

Seekher,
Seems to me they had a sort of Garand clone, don't know if it ever got issued during the war. Sarco had some advertized some time back.

So let them shoot a sniper match against other scoped rifles like a Garand M1C or M1D, G41(W) or G43 and AVT(40) sniper variants...SoupOrMan wrote:I can see it now.
