The point of a 20" barrel is the point. Bayonet hippie sticker standoff distance. Don't want Woodstock cooties if it comes to that.

55gr pills will punch through the steel IIIA plates if they're fired from a 20 inch barrel, but not from a shorter one.

I've done two builds, both with 16" barrels. If I really want to reach out there I will take out my Colt HBAR Match with the 20" barrel. I just put an Osprey – TA 3-9x42 IRF scope on it. Getting older and not willing to lay in the snow without a damn good reason, I have not sighted it in again yet. I know from past experience that it is a tack driver though.

Too bad you can't fix a proper M1905 bayonet to the M16. 20-inch barrel + 16-inch bayonet = Back, Moonflower! Back, thou patchouli-scented churl! Back, I say!

Didn't mad Mike modify a assist bayonet to fit the AR?

Please note: At this time, we are only performing repairs and sharpening. Our backlog is too great to take orders for new knives and swords. Do please check back, and as soon as we dig out we will be happy to take your money.

I've only built one AR and I did it with a 16" barrel (mid-length since I was intending to shoot it with open sights). However, I only intended it as a plinker.

If I wanted to do something for hunting, I would probably do a 6.8 SPC with either an 18" or 20" barrel. The exception would be if I wanted a varmint rifle, then I would probably do .223 with a 24" heavy barrel or something like that - I don't do varmint hunting now so ???? to some extent on that.

Not likely I am going to do that though, because Mauser.

From Fast Rope and my testing back in the day before the other forum ate it... you are looking at around 200 fps difference out of a 20" over a 16.

Effectiveness, increased sight radius, balance, all good reasons.

Not everyone wants or needs an SBR.

Had the displeasure of shooting a mutt harassing some farm critters and a little girl.
The 14.5" barrel took what was a fair bullet choice and made it almost useless. (Issue ammo)

I'm in the process of replacing a couple of toys, the AR lower that just got finished is getting a 20" barreled upper. It's a semi-retro build, A1 stock and foreend, light barrel, etc.
The concessions to the modern? MagPul grip and 6.8 caliber. A scope will be added to the carry handle when the red dot in its forward mount aren't in place.
