Friends of mine lives on one of the more restrictive states in the US. They've never owned guns but they were never against it, I think it was mostly that they weren't interested enough to bother. They finally started looking into it this year, and told me they're going to go through all the hoops to get their permits. The way it sounded, they'll get both handguns and semiautomatic rifles. One of the things that prompted them to go ahead now seems to have been that they want to make sure they have it in case there's any future restrictions.

Judging by current events, they are wise. It's much easier to hold on to what you have, then to go looking for something after it's been forbidden.
