On a sidenote, don't shoot from an untrained horse.

Or when your "tour" is on untrained horses.

We were on a Badlands horse ride, and the guide decided to plug a rattler with his 410. His horse was pretty upset about it, but not nearly as bad as a horse in the back of the pile, loaded with 300lb of fat chick, tearing ass down a mountainside.

Yep, I was thinking Mini-14 too. I've got one of those and a bit of WESCOG accurizing on my bucket list.

Y'know, I've been looking at the Mini-G from Shuff's Parkerizing http://shuffsparkerizing.com/ and I think it would be a perfect saddle gun. Maybe someday.

My horses have mixed emotions about gunfire. The gelding strongly disapproves of gunfire within his zip code. The mare will stand steady, but doesn't like the hotter magnums and stuff ( and no, I don't shoot from the saddle. One of us being nearly deaf is enough, and I wouldn't wish that high-pitched whistle on my worst enemy).

She's pretty bomb-proof, having tolerated flashing lights and sirens on fire trucks, ambulances and cop cars. She even puts up with that annoying helicopter that shows up for SAR drills, and delights in spooking the mounted team's horses. She seems to have perfected the Modified Stationary Panic.

Yeah, that reminds me of a little cutting horse named Fred. He didn't tolerate that bangy-bangy-thing on his back. Now, if I crawled off and stood in front of him, he'd happily crop grass while I shot, but off his back? No way. It's rodeo time.

Heh. Without video, it never happened.

Interesting site. I am wondering what is the point of his magazine conversion as opposed to buying an M1A (or other M14 clone)? Is it mainly for the forged receiver and USGI parts?

Ooooohhh, Me Likey! Only the price would keep me from getting one as a truck gun.

Any PCC really, but a lever would be most classic American.

For other historical interest, any shortened Mausers with additional sling swivels on the left side would seem appropriate. I believe that was a feature of weapons meant for cavalry use.

See the scabbard here: http://theswissriflesdotcommessageboard ... opic/10912

The Swiss gentleman who had one of my K31s during his military service was a mule train driver - thew toted Maxim machine guns around the mountains with mules. He probably had such a scabbard for his carbine.

Otherwise, how about saddle-ring Winchester 94 carbine? I have one. This is not mine - http://www.castbullet.com/srsling.htm

My choice - an FN 49. Maybe a bit long and heavy, but as elegant as all get-out.

I have plenty of lever guns, I had an Argentinian Calvary Mauser in 6.5x55 - lovely gun - really might be great for the job, or one of those cut down Garands.

I just think an AK, or anything else with that type of stock/grip/large mag would be too likely to tangle in reins/ropes/snag on brush, etc

I liked the idea of a semi as it could be used one-handed if needed, but a K31 would be a good choice as well.
