If you want a 458 Winchester, i think a cz 550 is around 1100. Theres a 70 suoergrade on gunbroker right now for similar money, and a super express for 200 more.

A pre-64 Winchester Model 70 Supergrade for $1,100 is a great price. In any magnum caliber is a steal. Gunbroker has a pre-64 Winchester M70 supergrade in .270 Win for starting bid of $3400 (too high)

A casual perusal of Gunbroker yields a pre-64 Winchester M70 in .300 H&H (long action, so can fit a .458 Lott) for $3,300 (also too high IMHO), and a pre-64 Winchester M70 in .375 H&H (also long action, but has a nice heavy contour barrel to open up to .458) for $5,000 (way too high).

If you want to build a DG gun in .458 Lott, I would recommend going with a pre-64 Winchester Model 70 donor rifle with long action.

I've seen some gunsmith specials where they shoe-horned a .375 H&H into a standard action, and the result wasn't satisfactory IMHO.

If you are patient, you can find a .300 H&H that's been converted to .300 Wby Mag in a pre-64 Model 70 for about $1500. A .300 H&H commands a premium, but you are losing the barrel anyway to replace with a .458 Lott, so who cares?

A pre-64 Model 70 in .375 H&H can be had for a about $2500 if you are patient. The profile of that barrel is heavy enough that you could bore it out from .375 to .458 diameter and still have plenty of steel.

I've had two MIM parts break on post-64 CRF Winchester Model 70s. Now that is out of almost a dozen post 64 Model 70s, so not a common problem, but if I was going to go through the time, effort and expense to build a custom gun, starting with a $1500 donor rifle vs. a $750 donor rifle (post 64 CRF) is only going to add 10% to 20% to the final cost. Well worth the premium, IMHO.

What exactly broke? You are aware that the claw and bottom metal is available from williams made from barstock, ptg makes the safety latch, as well. The reason why i want to use a post 94 classic action, is iwant to buils it in stainless, although for what theyre getting for them these days, i may just use a Montana 1999 action in stainless instead.

Safety lever on one. Something in the safety/sear mechanism on the other. The second issue was deep enough in the mechanism it was beyond my pay grade, so took it to a gunsmith for remediation.

IIRC, Montana 1999 is investment cast, which is done pretty well these days, but still not forged.

Go priced a forged action in stainless. I think Saterlee gets almost 4 grand, with a 3 year wait.

D'oh! Yup, a CZ550 Safari Magnum in .458 WinMag. I thought you meant folks who used one in the books.
