Had a nice range day Friday. I met up with The Boss who was at our facility for a short visit with some family and a brief tour. Some interesting observations were made.
The Adams 11.5" pistol I got last year is rapidly becoming one of my favorites. Light, handy, points like a dream, and the DD irons are a joy to shoot with. I really can't get enough of this setup. A decent red dot would make this a very naughty shootin' iron. I'm slobbering with anticipation of SBR'ing this rig later this summer.
I got to run the 20" PSA CHF upper I also got last year. I've discovered the negatives of having a carbine carry handle on a 20" rifle. I'll be changing some sights around this week. As it is, I had to bottom the front post out as far as it would go to get even close to zero. No bueno. A scope is eventually planned, but right now other priorities are, well, priorities.
The Remmy still does what I want it to do. I loaded up a batch of Mexican Match (Portuguese surplus case, 40 grains IMR 4895, 168 grain AMAX, seated to 2.8 OAL) and ran about 45 rounds through it. The LTR really needs a brake as the hop while shooting off a bipod is "dramatic." I think I'm going to stick with this load for a good while.
The Boss has a Mega .308 that was one of the first 2 monolithic uppers in .308 they made before the cease and desist showed up in the mail. The upper and lower are nitride coated and it has decent glass. It's a very nice semi for ranged work.
I got reacquainted with my Glock 22. It's been a long time and it was great to shoot it again.
A guy showed up and worked into the rotation with us at the bench. He was shooting a Mini-14 in a Tapco stock. Nice guy, but you couldn't give me that Mini. A 4" square group at 25 yds seemed to be the best it could do. With glass. Could be the shooter, but that thing was all over the place. 16 MOA is a shit deal.
In addition to the Mini he had a Kel-Tec PMR-30. I'd sum it up as "Grand planning, lackluster execution." Every two shots I had to push one of the rear fiber optic rods back into the sight as it was backing out. Out of a mag of 30, it FTF'd about 6 times. Otherwise, nice plinking gun. I wouldn't buy one I didn't have a chance to run the crap out of though.
Eventually everybody else left and I had the range to myself for about an hour. It was glorious. I did some work with a 9mm load I'd worked up (Acme Bullet Co. 9mm 124 grain coated bullet, 3.9 grains Universal, seated to 1.000) and found it to be an accurate and soft shooting load. I expect I'll make some more.
As I was scavenging the range for brass I noticed some 9mm cases that had some serious blowouts at the base of the body where it meets the extractor groove. I knew I had the only 9mm we had brought out there and that it was a model with a firing pin (Smith 459), but these were clearly fired from a striker fired pistol. The new guy had a Glock he ran a couple of mags through and I don't know the caliber. I did a sweep for brass when we arrived and found nothing, so this seemingly could only have come from him. The blowouts were in a position that looked like the Glock had an unsupported chamber and he was running +P. I think he's damned lucky he didn't have a kaboom right there. I have the empties at home and will post pics when I'm back tonight.
All in all, it was a good day. I need to bring less to the range though. Getting in and out of my main street apartment can be tricky without people asking questions. I'm thinking of getting a golf bag.
