Re: Really Bad Idea.
A local guy I know recently bought a short .458 Socom upper that he's been running on his SBR lower, as his new anti-bear device. I'm kind of interested to see how his experimentation turns out. Mostly from a "gee whiz that's cool" standpoint, since I don't really want to add yet another big bore rifle caliber just yet, and I'm still pretty happy with my Marlin.

It took me a while to find it again.

Given this was with hot commercial loads and you wouldn't want the kind of sights he had for a bear gun.
I concur with a lever action. It seems to be proven medicine .

Wasn't so much interested in the gun but did you notice the guy had the rifle canted around 30 degrees when he shot? Weird.toad wrote:It took me a while to find it again.

Good acting requires an imagination; reality requires a person not getting lost in their imagination.

He was using the short-range sight (CQB??). Those are normally canted off the main up-down axis. Lots of shooters use them, with the close sight set for one range and the telescope set for another range.Rod wrote:Wasn't so much interested in the gun but did you notice the guy had the rifle canted around 30 degrees when he shot? Like this, for example.

Or to use at short range when the scope is set at magnification. That way they dont need to change the magnification during shooting, they use the scope for long range and the short range sights for speed up close.PawPaw wrote: He was using the short-range sight (CQB??). There's not much use in my mind to have different zeros, it's just confusing. If you set the short range sights at very short range, it will be tricky to know the POI since the trajectory will be steep. But some shooters do set them at 15-25 yards and dont use them further out. At 5 yards that might save an inch between POA and POI, as opposed to the scopes zero.
