People don't understand just how damn BIG parts of America are. People in Cali ask why anyone carries, and I tell them they've obviously never left here. In parts of AZ, if an officer calls shots fired / officer in distress, their backup could roll Code 3 for 45 minutes.

I dunno what they ought to carry on their person, but an AR with 20 30rd mags in the trunk sounds pretty alright.
And may I say, from a moral point of view, I think there can be no justification for shoving snack cakes up your action.

If Our Hero had backed off and bothered to deploy his, then his delicate psyche wouldn't have been scarred, and he would've ended the fight with shots 1, 2,and 3 instead of 29, 30, and 31.

And the trunk is too far away for patrol. Out of reach = personal effects for your next of kin, or a trophy for the bad guys.

Well, in that case, where was his shotgun? A tube of 00 would have been pretty darned effective at those ranges.

Or is he in one of those departments that carry the shotgun in the trunk, as well? (I have heard there are issues with the Dodge Charger cop cars, due to low windshield height. Might have been on this very board.)

If you ain't done it, you ain't gonna understand how fast it all hits the fan.
And getting an AR or shotgun out of a roof rack takes more than a little effort when you're trying to hide under the steering wheel.

Back when I packed a badge, I had 77 .45 rounds on me minimum.
In winter, that went up to 103 (2 extra mags).

The nearest cover car may be coming from 35 miles away, or you're waiting for someone to wake up and actually answer the phone/pager.
Our local deputies rolled hot to backup another deputy on a shots fired call the other night, it took them 27 minutes to get there.
And that includes a section of I80 where they could open it up.

As to keeping everything up front where it's nice and accessible, with all the junk you have in a modern patrol car, you'd be surprised how little room there is up front. Let alone what happens when you roll up on a situation, leaving the doors open as you make a fast exit, stuff tends to wander off.

As to the 'ever happening again' comment, some people are excrement magnets.
Why did all the sex assaults come in on my shift? Why was I the one who always ended up fighting the gang bangers? Why did I carry extra handcuffs? Why does he carry extra ammo? Why do teens carry a condom, just in case.

Truth. I've been out of the game for almost 8 years. Times have changed just since then. I was chatting with one of our metro officers the other day and checked out the interior of his cruiser. The guys on the Gemini missions had more room in the cabin than a modern cop.
There must be an end to this intimidation by those who come to this great country, but reject its culture.
