At least the previous owner didn't drill and tap it for a scope mount and get the holes crooked. I saw that on a 1917 Remington Enfield. The even drilled a second set that was not as crooked, but not straight either.
Some old fellow bought it and restored it as much as possilbe to mil-spec condition. It was a huge improvement, but it still had those crappy holes in the receiver.

Well, she's finished!
Vaarok's stock needs a little refinishing, but is otherwise pretty solid. The upper handguard proved to be a really nice piece of wood, and I fitted it with a Kerr-style sling repro.
And I got a bit of a surprise- that bayonet was my grandfather's in WWII. It's a Utica Cutlery M1942. I only met him once, so it's pretty special. I've given it a good fighting edge, and I just need to clean up the metal a bit.

Nice lookin'. Congratulations on your 03-A3...or, as a guy at work always says...A3-03. He can't keep it straight. He thought he had one and finally paid enough attention to realize it was an '03.
While it may not be "correct" per the purist, it's still a nice representative example and will shoot and handle exactly like a "correct" one. Good job of recovery.
