I always follow the 4 Rules as delivered by the late great Col. Cooper. I'm even cautious about getting near the muzzle of things I know won't fire, as in a removed shotgun barrel or pistol with the slide removed.
When I teach, I make my "students" (I occasionally do informal teaching of non-shooters) memorize the 4 rules.
