Both are 12 ga. You can't go wrong either way. If your son would rather have a 20 ga, you can get all sorts of accessories for them too. You can hunt and defend your castle with the same shotgun with only a screwdriver and an allen wrench or two to convert between configurations. The 870 is the Swiss Army knife of shotguns. There's almost the same amount of stuff for the 1100 and Mossberg 500. It's just that magazine extensions are more difficult on the Mossy.

I have both the Remington 870 Express and the Mossburg 500 shotguns.
I think they are both really great shotguns, and I haven't had any serous problems with either one.
I would recommend either for a home defense shotgun however, the Remington is going to require more modifications and there by more $$ if you want to put any "tactical" toys on it like say a side saddle.
I don't think you can go wrong with either.
