Light loads using .357 magnum brass?

Post by toad »

I'm thinking about reloading some sorta light loads using .357 magnum brass for a friend.
You can use .38 special but there are some cleaning problems with it.
Has anybody done this?

I'm looking at a 125 grain plated Rainer plated flat nose with 6 grains of Accurate No. 2 behind it.

Yeah. Do it all the time for the reason(s) you mention. Lead, 158gr, 5grs of Bullseye work for me. About 1,000fps.

10,000fps.....gentlemen I think we have found a bear load

That was a 1.58 grain caliber .00357 bullet in front of 500 grains of Bullseye using a sabot through a smooth synthetic diamond bore?

If we're using a synthetic diamond bore, then we'd better be shooting communist zombie bears. If the bullet doesn't stop them, the class envy will!

Which would make it ideal for use at G8 summit protests.

Wish I could use hard cast lead but the close shooting ranges are all indoors and lead bullets are verboten.

The problem with the Accurate #2 is that it is a energy dense powder and doesn't fill the case.
It makes me nervous and I find myself triple checking before I get a bullet seated. The upside is you don't need much powder and it burns nice and clean. It also flows and meters nicely. Good accuracy at moderate velocities.

Of course that is one of the joys of handloading. Getting ammo that suits your needs that in some cases you can't even buy and getting it cheaper.

I wish I was more of a revolver fan myself because my current 1911 bounces more brass of the stall wall and out onto the range floor than it does to the side and behind me. For some reason they get upset if you try to crawl out there when people are shooting :?

I'm thinking about hanging/taping what ever some burlap to the right stall wall to take up some of that brass energy? Not that I don't have enough crap in my range bag already.

Have you thought about using one of the high volume powders popular for Cowboy loads? e.g. TrailBoss?
