Ozzie MilSurp Question

Post by DoctorSuarez »

I picked up some Australian 7.62x51 NATO at a gun show recently, and while it all works very nicely in my rifle (A .308 Garand), some of the cases have this weird grey staining on them. Most of the rounds are very shiny and smooth, but a few have these patches of matte grey on them. I fired one round (with my important parts about three feet away) and it fired and ejected perfectly. Still, should I be worried about this stuff?

A .308 Garand? The old stuff just isn't good enough for you, is it...

It started as a Greek racker, and when I got it, .308 was everywhere and 30-06 was mostly the stuff I can't shoot locally (because of the magnetically reactive bullets.) Then, right after I took her home and got my first supply of ammo, the UN shut down the South African supply and prices shot up.

Somebody, maybe Aim Surplus, has more of the South African 7.62. 140 round battle packs for 59.95 I think.

I haven't had any trouble with my discolored cases, Doc.
If the metal doesn't look "soft", I'd say run with it. But then as the lady said "He just don't love himself".

Thanks guys. Problem with Aim Surplus is that, in LA, you can't order ammo online. I wait until Ammo Brothers orders stuff, then I navigate their ignorance and buy what I can.

You through me there with the "Ozzie MilSurp Question" topic. I was thnking, "I didn't know Ozzie Osburne was into surplus!" Anyway, the discoloration, might be a lubricant or very mild ozidation. I really like the Swedish Surplus and some of that really looks bad although it shoots quite well. Anyway, I have found the PRVI Partisan 7.62 x 51, in the battle packs, to be better than either the Australian or the Lithuanian, at about the same cost: i.e. around $10 for 20. It is new, it cost much less than if it comes in regular boxes, and it is definately reloadable. Without getting too heavy into the 308 v. 7.62 x 51 contraversy, military surplus 7.62 x 51 should be used in surplus rifles where the headspace is on the long side. The brass is thicker, and the shoulder is usually "annealed" which shows as a discoloration in the case just behind the bullet. MagTech 308 is annealed but is way more expensive.

The Navy rebarreled a bunch of WWII vintage Garands as .308 back around the late 50's. My dad qualified with one back in 1960. I have the one he found at a gunshow many years later. It shoots just fine.

I wouldn't have a problem using either .308 or 7.62x51mm marked ammo in a Garand. The Garand chamber is built like a brick $#!t house. They're almost indestructible.

Just don't tell Eugene that you converted it. ;)

You are probably looking at the annealing. All on the shoulders right?

Sorry for the late reply. Actually, the discoloration was all over the case body.

Also, tell Eugene (whoever he is) that the original rifle was a mid-50s receiver, so it had no WW2 provenance for me to ruin.
