IMR 4227 in 8x57 JS

Post by Vonz90 »

I have been having a lot of trouble finding my normal rifle powder (H4895) or for that matter even a suitable alternative. I happened upon some IMR 4227 and bought a couple pounds just because I need something that goes bang to keep me shooting for now.

It looks like there are some good looking published loads for it in 223 (once I finally find small rifle primers) and even some passable 308 loads but the manuals I have on hand don't have anything listed for that powder and 8x57.

I found some stuff on the interwebs, but I would really like to see something from a published source before I start throwing together a load. (I especially care ablout pressure in the Mauser round since I would want to know where I am relative to the 35 or 50 KSI limit- I am happy to load to 50, but want to know that I am doing it)

Thanks

I don't think you will find any published info for this. IMR4227 and the very similar H4227 are relatively fast burning powders, really too fast for full power loads in rifle rounds. I have used H4227 in reduced power loads in .303 British, it should be OK for similar sized cartridges. I'll have to look up the load info and get back to you.

ETA - better powders for this class of rounds besides the H4895 you mentioned are Varget, Reloder 15 & 17, or IMR4895.

4227 is for the M1 Carbine.

For 8mm you want something you would use for the 30-06, like 4895, 4064, Reloader-15... Probably the new Reloader 17.

Lee 2nd, Speer 14th, and Hornady 8th manuals have no data for this. My advice is don't.

I wouldn't go any faster than RL 7 in 8x57JS, and then only light lioads.

The 8x57JS is the German equivilent to the 30-06. Use similiar powders.

One of my favorite powders is IMR 4064; works great on moderate to medium loads with bullets up to 185 grs in the 8x57JS.

To those recommending other powders, thanks but it is not like the 4227 was my first choice, or even tenth. I have just not been able to find anything close to what I want. When I saw the 4227, I found data for my 308, so it is better than the nothing I had before.

That said, I would also like to keep my Mauser fed in the interum too.

The only published data (lots of internet data out there) I've found for the 8x57 is from Lyman's 45th addition (1970) which lists loads for 168.grain bullets; 20.0 grains for 1658fps to 26.0 grains for 2040 fps. This would be a rather animic load compared to what I normally shoot, but better than nothing.

I would like to see something more recent, but I don't think it is off the wall. This is especially because there is a fair amount of data out there for 4227 in 308 and I've found that 308 loads and 8x57 loads tend to parallel each other more or less.

In any case, if you guys have not seen anything, thanks for looking.

When I can put my hand on my copy of Wiederladen, I'll see what I can find for the 8mm Mauser, but it's rather thin on US-made powders.

OK. I checked the 9th edition of Wiederladen. It only lists Rottweil powders (R901, R902, R903, R904, R905 and R907) for this cartridge, with bullets from 9.8gram up to 14.5gram. Not much help to you - sorry!
