Ended up with fairly decent load, which is good because I still have not tracked down any of my preferred powders.

The max load I could find for this stuff in the 8x57 was 26 gr for 168 gr. I am shooting 170 gr Speers, but the 26 gr was anemic and very light on the brass. I took it up to 29.5 gr at .5 gr intervals. I did not see any signs of overpressure, but the groups started opening up at 28.5.

So, 28 gr of 4227 behind a 170 gr Speer spitzer was giving me about 2 to 2.5 inch groups at 100 yards - which I do not consider bad at all for a '43 K98 with a scout scope.

I don't have a chronograph, but my extrapolation from the available data, I should be around 2300 fps. They are shooting about 3 inches lower than my regular load (46 gr of 4895), so not great velocity by any stretch, but again it is keeping me shooting and I don't think any worse velocity than most US factory 8mm Mauser ammo out there.

One thing to note is that all of these loads were at basically maximum overall length. The military Mausers shoot better with longer bullets due to the long throat lengths.

Dropped a decent sized 4 pointer Saturday morning with this load at about 50 yards. One shot, slightky aft of where I wanted. He went about 25 or thirty yards before he went down.

It is just one data point. Not as much margin as my regular load - but it works well enough.

I have 2500 rounds of 8mm mauser that I have been sitting on for a while. Want any?

It's in cases so I will dig them out and decipher the writing. I know I have some steel cased stuff.
