I have a .300 Blackout. I like it but I shoot the .556 a lot more.
Right now it is a reloader's proposition as there is not now, nor will there likely ever be the production capacity for this caliber that there is for .556 or 7.62.39. You can find 300 BLK ammo, but it is more expensive than .556.
One of the ideas behind the 300 is the .30 caliber bullet of the 7.62 in a more accurate gun. It achieves this for the most part. It isn't quite as powerful at the 7.62x39, but it is darn close. And it works in the AR much better than the 7.62X39 tends to do (although some progress has been made here) due to the more extreme curvature of 7.62X39 magazines not fitting so well in the AR. The 300 also uses .556 diameter rims compared to the larger 7.62X39 rims meaning more bolt strength for the 300.
The 300 is nowhere near as flat shooting as the .556. That is a deal breaker for some people.
The 300 suppresses very nicely.

Of course it's not as cheap as .223. no center fire rifle cartridge is.
Yes, the main appeal is for heavy bullets out a SBR with a can.

Re: .300 BLK
I am definitely tempted by a Sig 556 in .300 Blackout. Possibly even tempted enough to sell an AK or two to finance it at some point.

Re: .300 BLK
I've got an AR pistol with a Sig brace that's in .300 Blk. Coupled with my 762-SDN-6 and subsonic rounds, it's about as loud as a nail gun. Definitely a keeper. I've got the dies and have formed some brass, but I haven't seated any bullets yet.
I don't think that I'd ever be tempted by a non-short barrel .300 Blk.
